Found him on the 1900 Catskill, Greene, New York census (dist 71 img 20) as George W. Bates age 64, married to his second wife, Mary.

On Saturday night, just before 7 o'clock, George W. Bates, aged eighty five years, died at his home on Main street, where funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. C. B. Muste of the First Reformed Church; interment in the village cemetery.

Mr. Bates, who was a son of Warren and Angeline Munroe Bates, was born in the town of Cairo on July 2, 1834, and practically his whole long life was spent here. He early began to work, possessed of the desire to accomplish something. When he was but thirteen years old he sawed a cord of wood for the late Francis Story, thus earning his first money. For two or three years he was employed by the late John Conklin, and in 1856 started in the trucking business for himself and continued in this line up to a few years ago. He conducted the transfer service between the Catskill Mtn. RR, and the West Shore RR. from the opening of the railroads.

For years Mr. Bates had the reputation of being the most competent man to secure for any job of moving, his specialty being safes and pianos. He was one who took deep interest in village affairs, and was a large property holder.

He is survived by his wife, three sons (William P. and Henry G. of this village, and Charles C. of New York), one daughter (Mrs. F. M. Patchen of Flatbush), and a brother (Lewis N. of Colorado Springs).

Out-of-town relatives at the funeral were his grandchildren (Mrs. Addison Myers of Albany, Mrs. Charles Whitaker of Ridgefield Park, N. J., and William Bates of Westfleld) Fred M. Patchen and daughter (Mrs. John Bagley) and her daughter (Ruth), and Fred Patchen, jr., of Flatbush Mrs. Mina Swartwood of Jamaica, L. I. Dorrman Roe of Kingston, Henry Dederick of Brooklyn, Mrs. Catherine Finger, Clinton Finger, and the Misses Ella and Sarah Finger of Mount Marion. The Recorder June 19, 1919
