MONTEREY, Dec. 9. - Lewis P. Shannon, aged 45, life-long a resident of Monterey, was drowned Tuesday afternoon about 1 o'clock in the well on a neighboring farm, owned by Mrs. Buchanan, about three-quarters of a mile from his home. It is not known whether he slipped on the ice, or did not see the opening in the boards over the well and stepped in. He fell feet first and suffered bruises on the front of his face, where he probably struck the boards on the Bide of the well covering as he fell. Mr. Shannon had been at his own home a short time before the accident, talking with a friend from Monterey. He told the friends he could secure a ride back to Monterey from a man, at the Buchanan place and his friends went there. Mr. Shannon followed a short time later and found the men trying to start the car. They needed water for the radiator and Mr. Shannon took a pail and started for the well. According to the reports of those present, he had been gone not more than 10 minutes, when, alarmed over his failure to return, his friends started in search of him.
Going immediately to the well, they found him in the water, his head about 10 inches from the surface. He was quickly pulled out but life was extinct. Coroner Dr. O. A. Allen, of Watkins Glen, was called and gave a verdict of accidental death by drowning.
Mr. Shannon was born in Monterey Schuyler county, May 1, 1886, the son of the late Silas W. Shannon and Mrs. Mary Shannon. He spent his entire life in that vicinity, where he engaged in farming. In 1909 he was married in Monterey to Miss Genevieve Switzer, who survives. Besides his widow, he is survived by three children, LeRoy, of Monterey, who teaches in the Pine Creek School near Monterey George and Ruth at home and his mother, Mrs. Mary Shannon, of Monterey. The body has been removed to the Carpenter and Waldo Funeral Home in Corning and will be taken some time later to the home of his mother. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
