Because she had been scolded when she wished to go out last evening with boys and girls of her own age, and because her father and mother quarrelled, Emma Finger, fifteen years old, plunged head foremost from the window of their home, on the fourth floor of No. 399 East Seventy-second street, last night, and was probably fatally injured.
On the way to the Presbyterian Hospital she narrowly escaped further injuries. As the ambulance dashed across Lexington avenue, in Seventy-first street, a street car struck it. The shaft was broken and the horse's head cut. Charles Fisher, the driver, was cut on the hand, but prevented the horse from running away.
Dr. Kator and Policeman Clynes, of the East Sixty-seventh street station, jumped. The girl was only shaken up a little. The horse was led to the hospital, with the policeman steering by the broken shaft.
From what could be learned in the excited Belgian household last night, the girl was not happy there. She felt she was not allowed to enjoy the freedom of other girls of the neighborhood, and the fact that her parents quarreled weighed upon her mind. Last night there was a quarrel between John Finger, her father, who is a tailor, and her mother. The girl listened for a time, then suddenly ran to the window, threw it up and plunged out.
Policeman Clynes, standing a few feet away, saw her fall and ran to her. He called for a pillow and made a hurried investigation. The family were all in hysterics, and it was only from a younger brother that the facts could be obtained.
The girl frankly admitted that she had tried to kill herself. She said she did not want to live, because she wasn't happy. At the hospital it was found that no bones had been broken, but serious internal injuries were feared. A policeman was put on guard over her. - New York Herald January 5, 1903
