John (Jack) Edward Finger, formerly of Saginaw, Michigan passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at his White Lake, Michigan home after a courageous battle with Esophageal Cancer. He was 83 years old.
John was born on March 2, 1929 in Saginaw, the son of John and Ida (Gohlke) Finger. He married Dolores M. Ploch in 1955 and together they had four children: Jackie Nusbaum, North Carolina, Dr. John H. Finger, Troy, MI, Barbara Brow, Grosse Ile., MI and Mary Humphries, Highland, MI.
Wife Dolores resides in White Lake, MI and sister, Leola Steiner, resides in Pales Verdes Est., CA. He also left behind eight grandchildren: Eric, Matthew and Jennifer Nusbaum, Andrea and Alexa Finger and Cullen, Megan and Kaylin Humphries.
John graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1946. He attended the University of Michigan receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1954. He interned at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, Detroit. John served at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and was commanding officer of the 19th Medical Detachment, 7th US Field Army, Stuttgart, Germany. John was a physician for the Student Health Services at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. He took his specialty training in pathology residency at the University of Michigan and was the Assistant Chief of the Department of Pathology at the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1965, he began as an assistant pathologist at St. Luke's Hospital in Saginaw. In 1975, he was appointed President of the Senior Medical Staff. Later, he served as the Medical Laboratory Director at St. Luke's and co-owned Midland Medical Center in Midland, Michigan. He retired in 1999, after 34 years of service in the Saginaw area.
In his retirement, he enjoyed biking, reading and was an active member and supporter of the Saginaw Valley Air Museum (Yankee Air Force) at the Saginaw County H.W. Browne Airport. According to his wishes, John's body was donated to the University of Michigan Medical School with a memorial service to be held in Ann Arbor at a future date.
