Bill Auer and Ellis Roper were two friends from Sherwood Brothers. Ellis went to Sandia Nat'l Lab in Albuquerque when Sinclair bought out Sherwood. Bill went to Martins, as did my Dad and Alice. She was with Martins from 1959 to 1964. She stayed home with her sick Father from 1964 to 1968. After he died, she worked at the Public Health Service Hospital on Wyman Park Drive near Johns Hopkins Univ. with Ruth, from 1968 until her retirement in 1981. - John Vanko

She must have had a small stroke on Feb 18th late in the morning. Elsa said she had asked for her earlier. When I arrived about 1:00pm she was unconscious. She received morphine and revived that evening. I brought Jane, Jacob, and Mom. Alice said hi to everyone. She was very sleepy. When we left she said bye. That was the last time I heard her speak. Nurse Nancy said Alice responded 'ok' when asked 'how are you doing?' the next afternoon. Elsa said Alice would occassion- ally respond to her. I visited her the 19th & 20th about 8:00-9:00. Alice was mostly unconscious but would half open her eyes and wimper when called to. She was completely unconscious the 21st through the 23rd. We withheld IV fluids. Her last sip of water I saw was the evening of the 18th. Maybe she sipped some the 19th but I was told her swallowing reflex had stopped. She had a temperature and a swollen tongue (she had bit it when they raised her to change her bed, or something, Jane was there).

The previous week I received a call from the physicians assistant that Alice had an episode of congestive heart failure. Her circulation was very poor in her right leg. No pulse in the foot at all. Her toes were red and developed sores. The vascular surgeon wanted to do an arteriogram. It would take 2 days of prep in the hospital. The alternative was ulceration on the toes, gangrene, andblood poisoning. Thankfully we didn't have to put her through an amputation above the knee (what the surgeon said was possible) or arterial bypass. Alice's physician Dr. Stone said she might also have small vein disease due to diabetes, in which case bypass wouldn't do any good.

In Dec or Jan Alice had an earlier, smaller episode of congestive heart failure, I believe. Her toes got very red. The discoloration is the left toes never left.
