His parents moved from North Carolina to Indiana at an early age.

He went to California during the gold fever, but soon returned to Texas. In the great war bet ween the States (1861-5), although he was past the age when military service could be exacte d of him, he enlisted in the Confederate army, was assigned to duty in Texas, and for some ti me helped guard Federal prisoners at Tyler. In view of the above, we wonder if he might also be the Lewis Finger age 34, miner, born Indiana, who is on the 1850 Weaverville, Trinity, California census (img 3). (Taken October, 1850).

Found him on the 1850 Navarro, Tarrent, Texas census (img 6) as Lewis Finger age 33, farmer. (Taken November, 1850).

Found him on the 1870 Precint 1, Tarrant, Texas census (img 35) as L. Finger age 53, farmer.

Found him on the 1880 92nd District, Tarrant, Texas census (img 47) as Lewis Finger age 63, farmer. Born Indiana, father, mother born North Carolina.

According to a OneWorldTree entry at ancestry.com he was the son of John Finger (b. 2 Aug 1779) and Mary Troutman. John was the son of Jacob Finger (b 1754) and Maria Schramm. Jacob was the son of Peter Finger.
