Esek Finch has returned from Pittsfield, where he spent the winter. -
The Chatham Courier 1934.
Esek Finch, a native and the oldest resident of the Town of Canaan, passed away at his home there shortly before midnight last night following a lingering illness. The elderly man, who observed his 93rd birthday on April 11, was born at Queechy Lake.
Shortly after his marriage to the late Mary Etta Pitcher, Mr. Finch was instrumental in developing Queechy Lake into the popular summer resort that it is today. At 'Rest Haven' where he was born, Mr. Finch cleared a large area and made it into picnic grounds. For years, people from both New York State and Massachusetts made regular visits to the picnic grounds for outings. Complying with the requests of his customers, Mr. Finch constructed a number of cottages along the shores of the lake and rented them to weekend guests. As time passed, Mr. Finch's unique vacation spot was one ot the few havens of its kind for vacationists. The deceased's father purchased the site now known as 'Rest Haven' 110 years ago when he moved there with his wife from Rayville. He operated the lands surrounding the lake as a farm For many years before his son established it as a summer resort. With a brother, Mr. Finch constructed cottages that now compose 'Boyville,' a boys' camp at the lake. Mr. and Mrs. Finch sold their Queechy Lake property in 1921 and and moved to Canaan where Mrs. Finch died two years later. Mr. Finch has lived a retired life for the past 19 years.
The deceased is survived by one son, Ira Finch, and a grandson, Walter Finch, with whom he resided in Canaan. Funeral services will be held from his late home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Dr. Bartley, of the Canaan Congregational church, officiating. Burial will be in the Canaan cemetery. - The Hudson Evening Register August 6, 1940 page 8.
