Word was received here Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock of the death at Camp Croft, South Carolina, of Private
Karl A. Nicholas, 24. U. S. Army, son of
Mrs. Wesley Finger, Bluff Point. Mrs. Finger received word from U. S. Army authorities Friday night at 9:30 o'clock of the critical illness of her son. Welles Griffeth, local liaison officer for American Red Cross in Yates County, also was notified and arranged for Mrs. Finger to go to her son's bedside. She left Bath at 11:50 Saturday morning, but word reached Mr. Griffeth here two hours later of the death of the young soldier.
Contacting railroad authorities at Binghamton, the Penn Yan Red Cross official succeeded in notifying Mrs. Finger of her son's death and she left the train at Binghamton and returned home.
Private Nicholas was born at Victor, Monroe County, Dec. 16, 1916, son of
Arthur and
Dorothy Pepper Nicholas. He was educated in Victor elementary schools, and was graduated from Penn Yan Academy in the Class of 1934. He was a painter by trade and was employed for some time by
William Elling, local contractor. He left Penn Yan for military service March 21st last, and was attached to the Paratroop Division at Camp Croft.
Besides his mother, he leaves his step-father,
Wesley Finger, Bluff Point a sister,
Mrs. Stephen Machiuga, Oswego three half-brothers,
Morris,
Donald and
Arthur Finger and a half-sister,
Betty Finger, all of Bluff Point. The body arrived Monday morning and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Thayer funeral chapel, 201 East Elm Street Rev. Harold Riggle, of Bluff-Point- Methodist Church, officiating. Burial in Branchport.
