On Tuesday of last week Matthew Finger, a carpenter by trade, while engaged in raising a barn for Edwin Scott at Taghkanic, fell backwards from a rafter a distance of sixteen feet, and received internal injuries, from the effects of which he died on Friday afternoon. Mr. Finger was about 42 years of age and was much respected by his neighbors and
numerous acquaintances, for his industry, integrity and kindness of heart — Gazette.
We learn that Matthew Finger, formerly of Gallatin, met with a fatal accident while assisting in raising a building, in Taghkanic one day last week. He was pulling at a rope attached to a stick of timber below; and the rope slipping off, he fell backward to the ground and was instantly killed. - The Red Hook Weekly Journal May 13, 1859
