VERONA - Lt. Col. Herbert W. Leneker, U.S. Army, Retired, 86, of 5627 E. Main Street, Verona, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1921 in St. Johnsville, N.Y., a son of J. Harvey and Eva Charlesworth Leneker. Col. Leneker was a 1939 graduate of the Canastota High School. He was also a 1943 graduate of the NYS College for Teachers in Albany. After World War II, he attended the Graduate School of Journalism at Syracuse University. Col. Leneker was also a 1963 graduate of the Army Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

He married Shirley Wollaber of Canastota in Ft. Story, Va., on June 9, 1951. Following his World War II European service and prior to his recall to active duty during the Korean Conflict, he was employed as assistant editor and advertising manager of the Canastota Bee-Journal. During this time he wrote a front page column in the Bee-Journal entitled 'Local Lowdown.'

A career army officer, he served on the Army General Staff in Washington, D.C. His overseas service after World War II included Paris, France, Korea, and NATO Headquarters in Izmir, Turkey.

After his retirement from the armed services and moving to Verona in 1968, Col. Leneker was a substitute teacher in the Canastota, Oneida and VVS School systems for nine years. In later years he frequently served as master of ceremonies for public functions for the Verona Republican Club. An avid walker, he was often referred to as the 'Honorary Mayor of Verona.' Sept. 13, 1987 was proclaimed 'Herb Leneker Day' in the Town of Verona.

Col. Leneker was an Elder of the Verona First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Canastota Lions Club, a member of Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity, and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a life member of the Retired Officers Association.

Surviving besides his wife, Shirley, are: three daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Richard Petersen of Glenwood, N.Y., Dr. Karla and William Mulligan of Geneseo, N.Y., and Kris Anne and Robert Albrecht of Southington, Conn., five grandchildren, Erik Petersen, Sara Petersen Carney and her husband, Adam, Amanda Albrecht, Marilyn Albrecht and Matthew Albrecht and several nieces, a nephew and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Leneker who died in 1924, and John Leneker, who died in 1974, and one sister, Helen Smoll, who died in 1995. - Oneida Dispatch February 22, 2008
