Judgment by default for $202.50 was given Sylvanus W. Peak in supreme court Monday morning before Justice A. H. Seeger and a Jury in his suit against the Rev. J. Elmer Cates, former pastor of the Methodist Church at Millbrook, to recover a loan.
Mr. Peake testified that he loaned the defendant money, taking stock of Mr. Cates in the People's Trust Company of Boston as collateral security, charging 1.1 per cent interest, a legal rate in Masachusetts. Further loans totalled $375 but the plaintiff was repaid a small portion.
The money is said to have been used by the defendant when he campaigned a year ago against J. Griswold Webb for state senator. Mr. Cates is now touring the West on a two months' leave of absence. - Poughkeepsie Eagle-News October 23, 1923.
