George J. Gramata, of Carmel, NY and a former longtime resident of Yonkers, died Thursday September 3, 2009. He was 88. He was born in Mahonoy City, PA on March 15, 1921, the son of Joseph and Anna Gramata. George served in the US Army during WWII and was a retired shopkeeper for the City of Yonkers. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Yonkers and a member of the Charles Bajart Post in Yonkers. On April 7, 1945, he married Frances Finger at Most Holy Trinity Church. Frances died on March 10, 1993. He is survived by his daughters, Janine (James) Miller of Carmel and Virginia (Frank) Varga of Astoria, NY, his son Gregory of NY City, his sister Katherine Baricko of Hyde Park, NY, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Visiting Monday 3-7 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Tuesday 10 am at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Yonkers with interment to follow at Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers.
Found him on the 1930 Mahanoy, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania census (dist 52 img 1) as George Granata age 9. He enlisted in the Army on 10 Jul 1942, and was described as 68' tall, weighing 130 lbs.
